***RED FOX***
The red fox, with it's bushy tail and dog-like face, is rarely seen by day, emerging only at night to hunt. A resident of the countryside, it is also becoming a common sight in town and city suburbs.
Over the centuries the red fox has been relentlessly hunted, trapped, snared and shot by humans, yet still it's numbers abound. The main reason for it's success is it's ability to survive almost everywhere, even in busy city suburbs.
***LEOPARD***
The leopard is a silent amd solitary hunter of Africa and Asia. Renowned for it's adaptability and keen senses, it's camouflaged coat enables it to blend into the mottled shadows of it's habitat.
Although most frequently found in forestead regions, the leopard can live successfully in a variety of habitats, from semi-desert to the highest altitudes at which vegetation is found, just below the snow line. The colour of the leopards coat varies from a very pale yellow to black, but it is always spotted.
***CLOUDED LEOPARD***
The clouded leopard's magnificent markings blend perfectly with the lichen-clad branches of it's forest home.Found only in remote areas of India,Nepal and southeast Asia, it is now extremely rare.
Known also as the clouded or tree tiger, the clouded leopard is not truely one of the big cats, yet it is too large to be grouped with the small cats. For this reason, it is seen as the link between the large cats of the genus Panthera, which includes the true leopard, and the small cats grouped in the genud Felis.
***GREY WOLF***
The grey wolf has been the notorious villian of fables and fairy stories for centuries, yet this highly intelligant and sociable animal has done little to warrant it's terrifying reputation.
The grey wolf lives in a variety of habitats, from the arctic tundra and open steppes of the USSR, to mountain regions and forests.Once found all over the northern hemisphere, it's range has now been vastly reduced.Today, the wolf continues to be persecuted by man and it's natural prey has become more scarce.
***SERVAL***
The serval is a sleek, graceful predator of the African bush.A versatile hunter, it may stalk, pounce, spring in the air or simply lie in wait to ambush it's prey.
The serval, with it's long legs, narrow head, slender build and prominent ears, is one of the most attractive and most distinctive of the smaller cats.It may lack the strength and power of it's larger cousins, but it makes up for this with it's remarkable swiftness and agility.
***CHEETAH***
The cheetah is the fastest land mammels, sprinting up to 95km/h after it'sprey. It is no match for a gun, however, and suffered heavily from the fur trade before gaining protection.
The cheetah is easily distinguished from other spotted big cats by it's lithe build, smalll head and extra long legs. These features, together with it's capacious lungs, are perfect adaptions for high-speed chases after antelope in the African grasslands that are it's home.
***COYOTE***
A lone coyote howling at the moon has come to characterize the wilderness of the American West.Yet this nocturnal predator is not as solitary as was once thought and often hunts in packs.
The coyote, unlike most large North American predators, has actually increased it's range since the arrival of Europian settlers. It's success, despite persecution by fur trappers and sheep farmers, is due to it's remarkable adaptability and a willingness to exploit new habitats and varied sources of food.
