PRINCE CHARLES IN TRUE MASONIC FASHION SEEKS TO UNITE ALL RELIGIONS INTO ONE [CLICK HERE]The Prince of Wales is to launch a multi-faith campaign that is being seen as a move to take on an expanded royal role following the death of the Queen Mother. He has held a summit for Britain’s religious leaders at St James’s Palace to combat a “dangerous” breakdown of tolerance in society. He will make public their proposed solution on the eve of the Queen’s golden jubilee address to parliament later this month, flanked by a cardinal, two archbishops and the chief rabbi. The multi-faith campaign coincides with plans to increase his royal profile. He had dinner with Tony Blair last Monday and will, in future, hold bi-monthly meetings with the prime minister. Charles is also to conduct more ceremonial duties, including investitures, and take over from the Queen some of the duties of receiving foreign ambassadors in London. He will also increase his public engagements, particularly in Scotland. His plan to enlist millions of people in a movement to bridge the religious divide in schools, relief work and deprived areas represents a high-risk intervention for the heir to the throne and eventual governor of the Church of England. Schemes under discussion include opening Muslim faith schools to other religions, providing sanctuary for victims of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland and joint Christian-Muslim aid for the West Bank. Charles has moved rapidly since an initial meeting with religious heads on March 11. It was first inspired by a suggestion to the prince from Jonathan Sacks, the chief rabbi. "If you're in the path, you'd see, instead of a typical sunset, an extremely thin ring -- a ring of fire -- setting into the ocean," said an astrophysicist and eclipse expert at NASA. People on the East Coast of the United States, however, will miss the show. Although the sun's light will be dimmed by the partial eclipse, experts warn it is still dangerous to look directly at the light. It is so close that if it were to blow up before moving away from us, it could wipe out life on Earth. But this one is different. Called HR8210. The system was first logged in 1993 but little attention was paid to it. Then when Harvard student Karin Sandstrom investigated HR8210 for a college paper this year, she discovered that it is only just shy of the Chandrasekar limit - the mass at which it would be big enough to go supernova. That makes it the best and by far the closest supernova candidate discovered so far. June 11, 2002 BRITISH GOVERNMENT WILL EVEN FURTHER EXTEND IT'S INTRUSION OVER CITIZEN PRIVACY [CLICK HERE] The UK government has revealed plans to extend the range of officials allowed to spy on people by accessing their email and phone records. Privacy campaigners say they are "appalled". The powers, set out in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, were originally drafted two years ago, to help the police, customs, the secret services and tax inspectors fight "serious crime". They give officials the power to demand detailed information on individuals from telecoms and internet service providers. This could include their names and addresses, details of phone calls and emails they had made and received, of websites they have visited, and even an individual's whereabouts at a given time - based on which transmitter their mobile phone was nearest to. "Two years ago, we were deeply concerned that these powers were to be given to the police without any judicial oversight," says, says Ian Brown, director of the think-tank the Foundation for Information Policy Research. "Now they're handing them out to a practically endless queue of bureaucrats in Whitehall and town halls." Richard Clayton, a computer scientist at Cambridge University, explains why the proposed new powers could be useful: "If you can track a mobile you can prove people are cohabiting," he says. This information could help officials at the Child Support Agency. If approved, the new rules could come into effect as early as September. Brown says he is "appalled" that the government has rescinded on its promise that the powers agreed in 2000 would only be used to fight serious crime. It remains to be seen what level of official will be able to access this information, and what criteria they will need to establish in order to show that they have a genuine reason for requesting the information. Checks in place at the moment require only that the information requested be "necessary and proportionate". "You need checks on this otherwise we're moving towards a surveillance state." Last month the European Parliament passed a motion to allow governments to demand that telecoms and ISPs retain their records for an unspecified time. But so far no other free country has such far-reaching data collection powers. "We are a world leader in this," says Clayton. Contour, after orbiting Earth for about six weeks, will fire its main engine and begin looping around the sun, giving it gravity boosts as it approaches its intended destinations. The first stop is comet Encke in November 2003. The second is comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 in June 2006. The eruption occurred Monday at 9:19 a.m. EDT (1319 GMT) and showed up in a picture taken by one instrument of a satellite. If eruptions like these are aimed at Earth, they will disturb Earth's magnetosphere, but this one was not directed at our planet, a spokesman for SOHO said by telephone. July 18, 2002 53% OF ISRAELIS WANT THE THIRD TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM TO NOW BE BUILT UPON MOUNT MORIAH [ZION] Over half of all Israeli Jews would like to see the building of a third temple, according to a survey commissioned by the Reform movement's Israel Religious Action Center. The survey was commissioned for Tisha Be'av, which falls today. The fast, which marks the destruction of the First and Second Temples, ends tonight at 8:16 p.m. According to the survey, conducted by the Dahaf Institute, a total of 53 percent of the 775 people queried said that they would like a third temple erected on the Temple Mount. These included some 87% of religious and haredi respondents and 64% of those who described themselves as traditional, but it also included 63% of respondents from the former Soviet Union, as well as most of those of Middle Eastern origin and those of Western origin aged 18 to 35. July 22, 2002 AN ASTEROID OR COMET IMPACT COULD START WORLD WAR III EXPERTS NOW WARN [CLICK HERE] Scientists and military chiefs studying the threat are calling for a global warning centre to be set up to inform governments immediately of asteroid impacts. The risk is seen as particularly grave if an asteroid blast were to happen in areas of military tension, such as over nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan. Each year about 30 asteroids several metres in length pierce the atmosphere and explode, with even the smaller sized ones unleashing as much energy as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in Japan. Earlier this month, an Israeli pilot flying an airliner over the Ukraine reported seeing a blue flash in the sky similar to the type of blast caused by a surface-to-air missile, despite Ukrainian authorities saying no such missile had been fired. Experts now believe the pilot saw an explosion caused by an asteroid entering the Earth's atmosphere at high speed. Experts met last week in the US capital Washington DC to discuss what might have happened had such an explosion occurred over a volatile area such as the India-Pakistan region. "Neither of those nations has the sophisticated sensors we do that can determine the difference between a natural Neo (near-Earth object) impact and a nuclear detonation," Air Force Brigadier General Simon Worden from the US Space Command told the Aerospace Daily newspaper. "The resulting panic in the nuclear-armed and hair-trigger militaries there could have been the spark for a nuclear war." The incident over Ukraine was also extremely politically sensitive. Last year, 78 people died when a Russian airliner flying from Israel was hit over Ukraine by what was believed to have been a stray missile fired during a military exercise. Although the US has its own sophisticated military satellites which can detect launches and detonations of weapons and asteroid explosions, General Worden said that he and other experts would like to see a new warning centre established which would gather information on asteroid explosions and make it available to all governments. It is hoped that the shared information would prevent a disaster occurring, and a study looking at the possibility of such a centre is now reportedly being developed in the US Defense Department.
