The best spot in south sheilds for big cod is the pier with cod up to 20lbs being caught. Another spot for big cod is the wharry where a 27lb2oz cod was caught. Spots with lots of codling up to 5lbs and the odd 9lb or 10lb cod after darkness, range from whitburn to trow rocks fishing in the small bays and rock marks. Plenty of flounder and plaice caught on littlehaven beach during the summer months. Whiting are plentiful all year round on river marks and also up the pier. There are also coalies caught quite close in to the pier on both sides. On a rough day cod are caught from the river marks and after the rough weather anywhere from the second gate onwards on the pier will produce big cod. In the summer the mackerel are caught mainly on the open water side of the pier all the way up on daylites, spinners and anything shiny. Or if you venture to sunderland pier also fishing on the open water side using the same techniques you will get the same results. Roker pier is also a brilliant spot for whiting in the summer producing very good bags. |

This is where you find the best baits to catch different species. For Cod, lugworm tipped with either crab or mackerel strip or at the start of the cod season tip with mussel. For Whiting and Coalfish use ragworm tipped with mackerel strip. For flatties use Ragworm and decorate the bait with attractors and beads. When fishing river marks use ragworm and lugworm witch works especially good when tipped with smartbait peeler crab artificial bait which stays on the hook for ages. |
