About the Website Author
Hi! My name is Savran Clah. I am a Native American from Shiprock, NM. I lived on the Navajo Reservation for over half of my life. I am now 26 years old. I attended elementary school at Mesa Elementary in Shiprock. Then, I attended Tse Be Tai Junior High Scool 6th through 8th grade. At Tse Be Tai, I participated in sports (football, basketball, wrestling, and track & field), and I started concert band during fourth grade (percussion section, mainly snare drums, bells, and symbols), and there at Tse Be Tai is where I started to learn Spanish. After I have completed my studies there I attended Shiprock High School, where I was also active in participation in sports (football, basketball, track & field, golf, and student athletic training), organizations and clubs (such as NHS, although I was never a member of NHS; Student Aide; Peer Mentors; Backpacking Club; and Athletic Training), and I have proudly received many recognition and outstanding achievement awards during the four years there. I graduated from Shiprock High on May 25th, 1998. Soon after graduation I attended the Science Honors Program (SHP) at Diné College during Summer 1998. I continued my education at Diné College for the following school year Fall 1998-Spring 1999. The summer of 1999 I did research at New Mexico State Universty (NMSU) in Las Cruces on Boronic Acids with Dr. James Hageman as my Principal Investigator (PI). My name has been included on the following website as a student attendee in the program that funded us; http://www.chemistry.nmsu.edu/Bridges/students.html, so please do check it out. Two weeks before I was to finish my research at NMSU, I headed home to physically and mentally prepare myself for serving my mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A few months later I received my mission call. I was to serve a full-time (two years) mission in the Panamá Panamá City Mission. My entry date was December 12th, 1999, at 12:00 noon. My Missionary Training Center (MTC) companion was Elder Brett Eide from Napa, CA. I was in the MTC for two months learning spiritually and picking up great teaching skills to help spread the gospel to my brothers and sisters in Panamá. Spanish was expected to be spoken at all times except in church meetings and other assemblies. I've enjoyed my time there and the wonderful experience I have had in Panamá. I will include some pictures I have taken while on my mission. After my mission, I again attended Diné College for a year and a half with intended Life-Science Health major for an Associates in Science degree. I did not attain that degree, but instead I chose to transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelors degree in the Pre-Physical Therapy program. The summer of 2002 I was selected to participate in the Space and Life-Sciences Training Program (SLSTP), an eight week program held at the John F. Kenndey Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. You can visit SLSTP's website at www.slstp.nasa.gov/ . My research was in the Biomedical Engineering field, where my team worked with a device called the Impedance Threshold Valve (ITV). This device will directly effect the astronauts upon re-entry from spaceflight. The work that our team has done in that respect has been published in a well-known scientific journal. I have presented my work at three poster symposiums. I had a very educating experience with this program. I've made a lot of friends and I still keep in contact with them. I decided to attend Weber State University in Ogden, Utah to do that very thing. After two years of completing courses here, I have decided to just get a Bachelors degree in General Studies and a Minor in Criminal Justice. Upon the completion of this, I plan to enlist in the Army National Guard to become a Commissioned Officer. Once all the required papers are signed and I have attained the required physical fitness state, I will then be assigned to basic training for OTC in Monterrey, CA for nine weeks. Thereafter, I will do my program training the next year and eight months. When my program training is complete I then go into active duty and I will be stationed at the Army National Guard's descretion.
