The Pikachu virtual pet is back, and it's vastly improved over the original. Called Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS, the new tamagotchi-like virtual Pikachu now comes in full color. No more looking at spinach-green Pikachu! You can now interact with Pikachu in all his marigold glory. Watch Pikachu dance, eat, play games, jump rope, and do a variety of other activities in the neat little color display.
However, the new display isn't the only thing that has changed from the first Pokémon Pikachu. The outer shell got a makeover, and the plain-looking yellow hull of the original has been replaced by a glittery silver-gray one with a Pikachu silhouette in the middle. The actual program inside received some attention as well. You still have all the old features like the step counter, digital alarm clock and mini-game, but each neat little gizmo has been enhanced to make it easier and more enjoyable to interact with the virtual Pikachu.
Step Counter: Pokémon Pikachu acts as a pedometer, recording and displaying the number of steps you take every day. In Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS, the unit separately records the number of steps you've taken daily for the last seven days, so you can tell if you moved around more today than you did yesterday. Also, unlike the old version, Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS can record over one million steps (sounds like a lot, but if you wear it everyday, you can reach a million in just a few short months). Every 20 steps earns you one Watt, which can then be used in a variety of ways.
Mini-game: In the original Pokémon Pikachu, the mini-game was a slot machine. In Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS, the included mini-game is Hi-Lo, a card game where you have to guess whether the second card is higher or lower than the first card on display. The cards are ordered in the standard way where ace is the highest and two is the lowest. This game costs five Watts to play, and if you win, you can choose to keep playing by betting even more Watts for a higher payoff, or play it safe and keep your winnings.
Presents: This completely new feature in Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS allows you to trade Watts with your friend's Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS unit. You can also send different gifts to Pokémon Gold and Silver on Game Boy Color. These presents can be sent back and forth thanks to the infrared port on the Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS. Now, if your Pikachu is low on Watts, you can beg your friend to share some of his Watts with you in order to keep your lovable yellow creature happy. Furthermore, depending on how many Watts you send over to Pokémon Gold and Silver, you can end up with common items such as Berries and Pokéballs, or rare items such as HP Up. You may also get special items to decorate your character's room with, such as stuffed Pokémon, Posters and even Nintendo systems like N64, Super NES and Virtual Boy!
Alarm Clock: The new alarm clock for Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS is now programmable to create custom melodies of your own creation. By inputting the actual notes, you can even make your Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS play the PokéRap melody!
Your Relationship with Pikachu: How many Watts you give to Pikachu is the key to getting the furry electric bundle of joy to like you. Be good to it, don't shake-shake the unit too much while Pikachu is asleep, and the two of you can have a long, happy friendship. Well, at least until the battery runs out.
