INSTANT WINNER
PART ONE
Maybe it's the fact that I've always lived in a little "Dawson's Creek" like community, or that I've never actually been anywhere bigger than a town or a harbor, or that the farthest I've ever been is the neighboring community. Whatever it was, I knew that I needed to get out of Eden. Yes, Eden. The very boonies of New York. We're talking the sticks - beyond the burbs, and farthest from the city - New York City, NYC, the Big Apple. God, how I wanted to go to New York City. Sometimes I'd look at college guides my sister had gotten and just dream about going to the city. Out of the sticks, out of the boonies,
Out of Eden.
It was May 17, 1998 and I was at the corner drug store which was the biggest social hangout in my town next to the local bar but I couldn't go there - I was only seventeen. And like I'd want to hang around a bunch of lazy beer-bellies anyway? So I was hanging out at the drug store with my best friend, Evette, and we were picking up some of the finer things in life - Hersheys Chocolate, M&Ms, and let's not forget some Starburst. We were crusing through the magazines, looking at some magazine with Josh Jackson on the cover (Evette's dream guy) when I noticed a pull-out about a contest that Herbal Essences was having. And, it was like the profits had heard me or something, the grand prize was a trip to New York. I grabbed Evette by the should.
"God Vivie, what is it?! You look like you just found Leonardo DiCaprio's phone number or something."
"Uh-uh Evie, I've just found something better than that."
Evie scoffed and flipped her hair.
"Okay, okay. What is it?"
"I think I just found my ticket out of here."
I rushed to the nearest phone booth and slipped my only quarter into the slot, quickly dialing the number. I entered the ID number from the magazine. I crossed my fingers and quickly said a prayer.
"Sorry, you are not a winner."
Damn, damn, damn! Not a winner! I felt like the entire world had just crashed down on me. My one and only dream - ruined. The one chance I had to finally get out of Eden and it didn't happen. I had had complete faith in this and now, well, I was never going to get out of Eden...
"Let me give it a try."
Evie stepped up to the plate but, yeah right, even if she did win, that would be even worse. She would be going to New York City and I would be stuck in Eden. But some kid in a small town in Africa who didn't even speak English would probably win it. I sighed. Evie entered her ID number and winked at me. She waited for a responce. I waited in anticipation. She smiled and shrugged.
"Here Vivie, I think it's for you."
I took the phone, wondering what she meant. I listened in on the converstaion.
"Congratulations! You have won the grand prize, a trip to New York City!"
I couldn't help it, I groaned. She had won. Out of all the people in the world, my best friend had won the trip to New York City. My best friend, who had been cruising the drug store with me that very day, was off to bigger and better places like Macys and Tiffanys. Meanwhile, while she would be living my dream, I would be stuck...
Stuck in Eden.
"Why are you groaning Vivie? Wasn't it your lifetime dream to go to New York City?"
I couldn't believe her!
"What? Are you rubbing it in now or something?!"
I was so angry! That little....
"No, I mean, I'm not going to New York City. I'm giving the trip to you. You need it more than I do..."
Oh my god! Oh my god! Evie, Evie, Evie, you're giving this chance to get out of here to me. You're really going to give me a trip to New York City. You're giving up the grand prize?!
"Oh Evie! You're the bestest friend in the entire world. I will never be able to make this up to you. I'm just so, so, so...."
"A simple 'Thanks' will do Vivie. It's perfectly okay. I'm happy...
In Eden." |
