"Every man's hand is against the murderer of little Alma Tirtschke, whose body was found on Saturday morning in a right-of-way off Gun Alley, for the circumstances of the murder are such that never has there been created a deeper feeling of horror. The greatest activity is being displayed by the police, and senior detectives Brophy and Piggott, with whom Plainclothes Constables Portingale and Harper are associated, have been visited by many persons who have expressed their opinions about the crime and have offered to render any assistance that might be required. Many of their callers have been in a commotion of excitement caused by resentment of the diabolical crime and their eagerness to suggest possible clues has shown how the public mind has been tried".
