The "Good" of Horse Slaughter
Why Some People Feel it is Necessary

NEW! Poetry and Doll Maker with Galleries!     [Learn About Our Ecommerce]

PLEASE READ THE HOME PAGE OF MY SITE BEFORE YOU READ THIS PAGE....I DISCOVERED THAT PEOPLE ARE ONLY COMING TO THIS ONE AND THINKING THAT I THINK SLAUGHTER IS REALLY GOOD AND THEN THEY CURSE ME IN THE GUESTBOOK....READ THE HOME PAGE FIRST!!!!

SITE OWNER: A few people have explained to me why they believe that horse slaughter is necessary, and said that I should show the "other side" of horse slaughter. I can see what they mean, but it doesn't make horse slaughter seem much more acceptable. In a way, horse slaughter can be good because it puts neglected, unloved equines out of their misery & saves them from that life of misery, pain, and isolation. When I'm commenting on something someone else says, I put it in parentheses and it will have my name before it. Here is one argument from a visitor named Cindy:

THIS FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH DOES *NOT* REFLECT THE VIEWS OF THE SITE OWNER!!!!

A VISITOR TO THIS SITE: "Your site is beautiful and informative. I just have a question or two for you. What do you suppose we do with all the horses that would go to the slaughter houses? Who will pay for the care of many unwanted animals? What do you think would happen to the prices of pleasure and show horses if slaughter was stopped? Do you think a quick death is worse then a life of abuse and neglect? Your intentions are good, but the demand for horse products is too high (horse_soul_86: They CAN make more. I've never heard of there being a problem with a low supply of the things that go into horse products. There are only a couple hundred million horses on earth and over 6.5 billion people. There are already too many humans than earth can support, but we aren't going to start slaughtering them because we don't have enough resources.) and the number of horses that are flooding the world are hard to deal with (horse_soul_86: And I can see you are making it so much better by being a breeder! You said you are a breeder at the bottom of your message, and then you have the nerve to complain about horses flooding the world! How hypocritical. I see that you think you are a special case and it's all right for you to breed your horses but for anyone else, they're just "flooding the world with horses."). Until everyone stops believing that all mares are to be bred, and all colts shall remain stallions and should be bred then there is no alternative to slaughter (horse_soul_86: EUTHANIZATION. It really isn't that expensive for it to be done and the body to be disposed of-sometimes as low as $125-well worth it to save a horse from slaughter.). Personally I do not want to see the houses closed, but perhaps laws enacted on the shipping to the houses and the treatment on the feed lots. A killer doesn't get paid for bad meat or bruised flesh. Do you eat cow, chicken, pork or other animal products? Those animals are treated much worse in their up bringing and hauling and slaughter then horses are (horse_soul_86: Maybe that's because HORSES ARE NOT RAISED FOR MEAT, THEY LIVE AS PETS-because that's what they originally were-the owners don't plan on sending them to slaughter when they first buy them-so they treat them like pets until they don't want them anymore. EQUINES ARE CLASSIFIED UNDER LAWS AS COMPANION ANIMALS, JUST LIKE DOGS AND CATS....Those other animals are horribly slaughtered also; and yes, I care very much for them too, but they are raised that way because all the people want is their meat and skins-and they want to make them and kill them as fast as they can for money. It's ALL very sad.). Give the full story and alternatives to the overpopulation of horses. The slaughter houses are a necessary evil in the horse world. I am a breeder and have had a passion for horses all my life, but I see the necessity of the slaughter houses. And yes, I have visited a slaughter house, I have followed a load of horses from an auction to their final destination and watched the process and method of death and butchering. I have also purchased horses from the killer pen at the sales and rehabilitated them and sold them to loving homes. Your intentions are good and the site is beautiful but who would care for all the unwanted horses (horse_soul_86: I'm mainly saying in this that I think all unwanted horses with absolutely no one who'd take them should be euthanized-no one needs to care for them-just take them to be euthanized instead of slaughtered.)?"

-Cindy (visitor)

SITE OWNER: Yes, I have thought about this before. I have wondered what would happen to all of the innocent, unwanted horses who are completely helpless without someone who wants them that would suffer even more if they didn't go to slaughter. This fact won't change my mind that horse slaughter is wrong, but there wouldn't be the problem of unwanted horses if idiots who can't properly take care of them didn't have them in the first place, heartless, money-hungry, overly-proud-of-their-bloodline breeders didn't breed their studs and broodmares over and over again, horse racing wasn't so profitable, and if meat men (the evil "people" who buy these helpless equines for the slaughter houses) didn't make so much money. Do you think I actually CARE what will happen to the PRICES of the SHOW horses?! I'm concerned about the horses well-being, not how the "horse economy" will change (It won't change as dramatically as you think. The horse industry would LOVE more horses to sell stuff for.) ANY horse is good to me, worth something (I'm not saying I don't love show horses, it's just that I love them the same as a common horse.). I CAN'T STAND IT how people think show horses are worth more and better than little "lower class" ponies and horses. I REALLY hate it when people think that way. How shallow can you get?! It's a loving, innocent ANIMAL-how dare you judge it on it's looks instead of it's spirit and soul! I think that unwanted horses should be euthanized and cremated (some people say disposing of the bodies would be a problem). THAT'S MY SOLUTION TO HELPING HOMELESS EQUINES. I'd rather see them peacefully die in my arms than have a railroad nail drilled into their skulls! AND BY ALL MEANS, HORSE SLAUGHTER IS NOT A QUICK DEATH! Days or weeks traveling across the country in below zero freezing cold, or sweltering heat with ABSOLUTELY NO food or water; larger horses crushing to death and stepping on smaller ponies and baby horses in fear and desperation, babies getting pushed around and lost from their dams and never seeing them again. THE JOURNEY IS TORTURE. IT IS INCLUDED IN THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF HORSE SLAUGHTER. You have just proved to me that some people know very little about horse slaughter...Some people just don't understand the facts of horse slaughter; the slaughter houses aren't there to "help" the horses, they're there to make MONEY. HORSES ARE NOT RAISED FOR MEAT, AND ARE NOT GOVERNMENT REGULATED, THAT'S WHY HORSE SLAUGHTER IS NOT THE SAME AS COW, CHICKEN, PIG, OR ANY OTHER KIND OF ANIMAL SLAUGHTER! HORSES ARE LISTED UNDER "COMPANION ANIMALS" IN LAWS, NOT "LIVESTOCK." HORSE SLAUGHTER HAS NOT BEEN AROUND FOREVER. THIS PROVES THEIR POPULATION CAN BE CONTROLLED BY OTHER KINDER, GENTLER, MORE HUMANE WAYS. We don't need horse slaughter--IT NEEDS US (our money & horses).
