The Smashing Pumpkins break up! At the height of his band's success, when the nation's largest arenas and amphitheaters were his stomping grounds, Billy Corgan already knew he'd end up at the same sweaty hometown club where he started out. After 13 years, more than 25 million albums sold and a steep bell curve of U.S. popularity, the Smashing Pumpkins are calling it quits on December 2, 2000 after one last show at Chicago's 1,100-capacity Metro. Hey thats my hometown. I'll give you a hint who will be the band of the month for January 2001.

Leigh Lawson (Ten Foot Pole's Bass Player) passed away on August 26th 2000. He was working in San Diego when he complained of nausea after lunch. He laid down and went to sleep, permanently. Attempts at CPR and cardio shocks did not revive him. The autopsy showed he had heart failure due to an enlarged heart and no drugs or alcohol in his system. Leigh was only 28.

On Thursday, artists, fans and friends of Rage Against The Machine expressed sorrow over the end of an era for one of the past decade's most influential and outspoken bands, and explored the potential reasons for frotman Zack De La Rocha's split with the group. The singer's plans to record a solo album created a rift in the band in the months before his departure, according to director Michael Moore, who worked closely with the group over the past year. De La Rocha said Wednesday that he is leaving Rage Against the Machine because he feels that the group's artistic and political goals were undermined by a failed "decision-making process."
