Raymond V. Lemay Family |
| Our family is growing and changing everyday. We need to make all these changes as they happen. |
| Extended Family Picnic |
Our first picnic was in August of 2000. We had it under a canopy in one of our metro parks. We had about thirty-five people from my husbands family. This is the Slawter-Colombo family. It includes the Slawters(from W.Va. it is the Slaughters), Colombos from Canton, Ohio, Hunters, Perkins, Ketabians, Meeks, Cooks, Lemays( one who married into my family and me for marring into this family) and more. We had a good time.
Our second picnic was in August 2001. We were at the same park but in a new pavilion that had just built. All enclosed with a/c, kitchen, bathrooms, bbq grill, sound system and all. We had seventy-eight people at that one. We had alot more fun. There we included my family, the Lemays. This family includes the Lemays, Swartzlanders, Northingtons, Elliotts, Perrys, and more. We had an auction and 50/50 raffle to raise the money to pay for the pavilion for this year. We had so much fun that we didn't realize that we raised more than we needed. The kids will get to enjoy and old fashioned ice cream social fishing pond. We hope to top one hundred family members this year and more next year.
Our third picnic was in August of 2002. We were again at the same park. Our fourth will also be there. We had a great time and new found members of my husbands family joined us. We again had our auction which people seem to love. We also had two 50/50 raffles and we added a fish pond for the kids. We played bingo and gave prizes to the winners. We have more and more people coming to each one. Our families keep growing. We had a five day old baby attend this one. We find members of the family that we didn't know and some of them join us.
Our fourth picnic was in August 2003. This one was better than the others. The kids had games outside and won prizes. We still have the auctions and 50/50. Everyone loves them. We play bingo and give prizes for those who come the farthest, the oldest, the youngest, the one with the most kids, ect. We had a good time.
Our fifth picnic was in August 2004. This is the first year we had rain. Very disappointing to the kids. During a break in the rain some of the younger men took the boys out for some football. We gave awards to the auctioneers, and those who did the planning, the treasurer, and others who had a big part in the picnic such as setup and clean-up. We also had our 50/50 drawings and our auction. It was a good time even with the rain.
We had our sixth picnic in August 2005. We had the theme of a Luau. We had almost 100 people present. We did the same as other picnics but we did do the Limbo. We decorated with bright colors and lots of grass skirts. There was more fun and more food. We sure hope everyone enjoyed themselves.
This past August we had our seventh picnic. Our theme was Christmas. That's right, we had a tree, presents and lots of decorations. The kids had a blast. We didn't have as many people this year because of gas prices and a couple of deaths. Our auctioneer couldn't be there. He was in Iran with his mother who had heart surgery. He missed the picnic so much that he called during it to see how it was going. Once again a good time was had by all.
Our eigth picnic will be August 2007 and the theme is The Fifties. All music with be from the 50's and poodle skirts galore.
I'll be looking for duck tail hair cuts on the guys(that is those who have hair). I sure hope the gas prices are down and no one has any emergencies.

Family Picnics
|
| We have, for five years now, had a picnic on the second Sunday of August. The first one was not really planned except to tell people we were getting together a the park. The second one had more thought and planning. |
We rented a new pavilion, notified family members out of town. Everyone was to bring a dish to share and if possible an item to put in an auction. We had a 50/50 raffle and the auction. We earned enough money to rent the pavilion for the next year. Alot of fun and laughs were had by everyone. It was such a sucess that we planned for a bigger and better picnic for the next year. People kept calling it a "Reunuion" but it is just a picnic, a time to get together with each other and enjoy a day with family.
At the next picnic, we had a much larger autuion and two raffles. We had more fun. We met new family members. We even forgot some of the things we planned. We did however, have a fish pond for the kids. They loved it. We did cookbooks for the first year and they liked them so well that we did it again for this year, but with everything that was going on and the size of the auction, We plum forgot the cookbooks. That's okay though. We can just add to it for next year. We made enough money this year to pay for the pavilion, cover the cost of plates, cups, plastic ware, tableclothes, decorations and anything else we need. We are even planning a surprize for those who come in 2003.
My only regret is that most of those who come are from my husbands family. My family, "The Lemays" don't show. I have 13 siblings, 2 of which have died. I have aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and they don't feel they should be there. I have two brothers and a sister who came. The sister drove 13 hours to attend, while others right here in town couldn't seem to make it. I was told if it was just a "Lemay Thing" they would attend. I sure hope all the Lemays aren't like my family. Family is important to me but I guess my sibblings don't feel the same.
Anyway we had a great time and are looking forward to next year. Maybe in a year they will change their minds. Pictures of our picnic are on the picture page. |
