“Hi, Christian!” I exclaimed walking into his room and giving him a quick kiss.
“Hi, Tenel. Guess what?”
“Aliens landed.” I guessed.
“No!” He said smiling.
“You found a cure for diseases.”
He laughed. “No! I’m getting out in an hour.
“Cool.” Then I felt sad.
“Just in time for the funeral.” I murmured.
I shuddered. Today was Monday and Jackie Mordon’s funeral. Even though we were enemies I was still going. I felt guilty I guess.
“Are you going?” I asked.
“ Of course.” Christian said, “I don’t want you to go alone.”
“I want you to come.” I said softly. I put my head on his shoulder and sighed. He softly brushed my brown hair back from my face.
“Hi, Christian!” a nurse said, walking into the room, startling both Christian and I. She was pretty young, and must have just gotten out of college. She was pretty, I guess, with blondish brown hair and bright green eyes. “Is this the beautiful Tenel?” She asked, her eyes twinkling when she set them on Christian.
“Yup.” He said proudly, blushing when she said beautiful.
“Hi, Tenel. I’m Becky, Christian’s nurse inter. I’ve heard a lot about you.” She turned to Christian here eyes shining. I think she has a crush on him. “Guess what Christian?”
“What?” He inquired.
“ I pulled some strings and you can go home now.”
“Really?” He exclaimed, beaming.
“Really, so pack your bags and get out of here.” Then, she turned and walked out the door.
We left quickly and stopped at his house. After he put his stuff away and his mother left him alone, we went to my house.
Maria, Jaina, and Ryan were at my house when we got there. “Randy is on his way over so we can all go to the funeral.” Jaina told me when we walked in.
“You’re all going?” I asked, surveying the room. Jaina and Maria were on the couch and Ryan was on the love seat across the room from them, playing the Nintendo 64.
“Yeah,” Maria replied. “Why wouldn’t we?” I shrugged. Hell if I knew.
The doorbell rang, startling me once again. I turned around and opened the door. Randy stood there, with his black Nike hat, his golden skin shining in the sun.
“Come on in.” I said, to my friend. He came in and sat down next to Christian and Ryan.
“Hella.” He said to everyone, once he got comfortable
“Well are you ready to go?” I asked still standing. Why was everyone still sitting.
“Yeah. Why are you in a hurry, Tenel?” Randy asked looking confused. I shrugged.
“I just want to get this over with.” I stopped and thought about it. I guess I was scared. “Let’s go.” We all piled into my truck. I was in the driver’s seat, Randy was next to me, and Christian was on the passenger side. Jaina was in the fold out seat in back of me and Ryan and Maria were in the back.
Christian was being unsettlingly quiet but I didn’t say anything because I knew he was upset over everything that has happened. I just talked to Randy while Jaina read and Maria and Ryan talked.(I guess.)
“Hey Randy?” I said whispering so that I didn’t disturb neither Jaina nor Christian. Randy looked up at me questionably. “What do you think they are doing back there?” I asked gesturing to Ryan and Maria who I couldn’t see well but could hear some noises.
“Hmmm.” He said thoughtfully until we heard a shriek of laughter from Maria. “I think there’s a little somethin’ somethin’ going on there, if u know what I mean.” He wiggled his eyebrows and smiled and I laughed.
“What are you two whispering about?” Jaina asked, disturbed. We laughed.
“About your momma!” Randy exclaimed, playfully.
That must have caught Maria’s attention because she yelled back “Yeah, what is going on up there.”
I glanced back there quickly, “ What?” I said innocently. I looked at Randy. Our eyes met and we started laughing hysterically. Then I turned my attention back to the road.
“Don’t play dumb. I know you’re up to something.” Jaina teased.
“Oh, yeah.” I said sarcastically. Glancing at Randy again I added, “ but I guess the truth must come out.” I sighed. “Me and Randy are having a affair.” Put of the corner of my eye I saw Randy look horrified.
“Hell na!” He backed off a little and I laughed.
“What?” Christian exclaimed coming out of his daydream. “Randy, Tenel is there something you should tell me.” He said in mock seriousness.
“Just kidding Christian.” I reached over Randy and squeezed Christian’s hand. My arm brushed Randy’s soft tan skin when I did, and I felt a tingling sensation, but I ignored it.
Christian didn’t say anything and returned to the window. I shrugged and turned up the radio to the song “Unforgiven II” by Metallica. I started singing to it and to my surprise now one said anything. I have the worst voice in the world. Then Randy joined in as we made our way to the cemetery.
When we got there, we stepped out and suddenly I felt a wave of self consciousness and nausea. I never really liked Jackie, but I never really hated her either. I looked around the cemetery like a deer caught in a headlight. Lot’s of people were there. It broke my heart to see so many people sad. I felt someone grab my hand. Turning, I saw Christian with concern in his deep, brown eyes.
“Are you okay?” Christian asked.
A lump formed in my throat. I nodded not trusting my voice. “Come on.” He said gently and I followed him to the area were the people had gathered. The service was pretty and also heartbreaking. It pained me to see so many people so sad I almost felt guilty. The service ended and I guess I looked too upset because without a word everyone went to the car. I felt bad about not talking to Jackie’s parents, but I couldn’t do it.
On the way home everyone was quiet but Randy who was trying to crack jokes and I tried to smile at them but I couldn’t laugh even though I knew he was trying to cheer me up. I dropped everyone of and drove around. Life was so short. I couldn’t believe someone my age was gone. I mean going to the funeral made it real. It made me wonder. Should I do more with my life?
My life flashed before my eyes in a matter of seconds. Turning down an empty road, I pressed the gas and drove faster and faster. A perfect world flashed before my eyes and then that world crumbled to pieces. Faster, faster my mind screamed until all of a sudden I stopped, throwing my self forward. My head hit the ceiling and I took a deep breath. Slowly, I turned down this road and that road until I realized I was on Randy Luciano’s road. Why, I didn’t know but I went there but I did anyways.
Shakily, I climbed out of my truck. I knocked, looking around the yard.
“Tenel, hi!”’ His mom said. “Come on in, Randy is in his room. Go on up.” I nodded politely and smiled. Then I hurried up the stairs to the familiar bed room of my close friend.
“Tenel?” Randy looked up from his N64 questionably as I walked into his room. “Hi!”
“Hey,” I replied sitting down. I told him about what I did and he looked impressed. He handed me a controller and we played for an hour as to shut off the world and shut off the pain.
