Hello and Welcome!
Creating my Natural Hair Journal is something that I enjoy doing. I am delighted to say that I have made the decision to refrain from chemically processed hair. I started my natural journey in March 2004, and I do not see any chances of me resorting back to my old perm hair again. My only regret is that I did not become natural sooner. However, please keep in mind, growing one's hair naturally is not a bed of roses. It can be very arduous at times, and the styling process is limited for people who have started their journey with very short hair.
My journey began with what is called the "The Big Chop." The Big Chop is when a person cuts her hair with the intent of cutting all of the processed part off. Some people "Transition" before they chop, which allows the new growth of the hair to reach a longer length before chopping. Thus, expediting the growth process. In my case, I did NOT Transition. I simply had the barber cut my entire nine inches of perm hair to a mere Ceasar. In other words, I cut my hair so short, that one could literally see my scalp (LOL). I was happy when I did the BC, because it enabled me to see what was hiding underneath the permed hair for more than two decades. It was an interesting discovery, and I learned that my natural hair is very curly and nice looking. But despite the niceness though, I began to realize that once my natural hair began to grow, it was beginning to look a bit dull.
Consequently, here I was, walking around with a "TWA." The TWA is what is called a Teeney Weeney Afro. Having a TWA was nice at first, but I must admit that I looked very "Mature and Serious." I was beginning to grow tired of the TWA, but there was nothing that I could do. My hair was too short...
With weeks of trying to create something out of nothing, I decided to have patience and wait until I was able to make some braids. After months of waiting, I am now able to make medium sized box braids. In preparing them, I make sure they are neatly parted, and I take my time braiding them. I redo them once per week. The result is fantastic. My braids are still short, but to me it is a general reminder of how fast my hair is growing.
