------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This web site was first registered with world-wide search engines in September 2001.

Do you fall into one of the following categories? If so, this web page will be of particular interest to you:

- Claims Manager of an insurance company, or reinsurance company, (concerned with
litigation, permanent health insurance, critical illness, etc) involved in assessing
people on health claims, road traffic accidents, works accidents, etc,

- Solicitor acting on behalf of an insurance company in connection with litigation over
some form of accident or illness of a plaintiff,

- Occupational Health Manager of a company whose job might involve assessing employee's
claims for early/ill-health retirement, or determining the clinical status of an
employee presently on long-term sick leave,

- Personnel Manager or Pension Trust Manager involved in the above, and/or the
monitoring of the continued sickness pension status of an employee,

- Some other combination of the above,

- or indeed any manager or legal executive charged with the responsibility of obtaining
an independent assessment of the clinical/medical condition and present/likely future
capabilities of some person?

PAT comprises a specialist independent clinical assessment consultancy service available to either the Health Claims Departments of insurance companies, or in litigatory circumstances to Defendant insurance companies and/or their legal representatives, and also to Plaintiff's actions.
As part of our clinical assessment services PAT offers comprehensive evaluations of claimants alleging either psychological or physical disabilities.

Our consultancy specialisms consist of three broad areas of professional expertise;

- Chartered Clinical Psychologists conducting both qualitative and quantitative
assessments of the total range of potential psychologically-related conditions
(eg. Reactive Depression, Anxiety, Stress, phobias, PTSD, personality disorders, etc,
as well as head injuries and associated neuropsychological cognitive/affective
impairments).

- Chartered Occupational Psychologists providing psychometric evaluations of ability/
aptitude, personality, and occupational interests of the claimant.
Such assessments seek to identify specific employment roles suited to the plaintiff's/
claimant's remaining physical and psychological capabilities.

- State Registered Occupational Therapists conducting assessments of all physical
conditions and disabilities (including such relatively newly-recognised conditions
such as Repetitive Strain Injury, Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome, etc), and relating the
patient's assessed clinical capabilities to the personal social and domestic
impacts alleged by the plaintiff, and also to the tasks delineated within the
claimant's premorbid occupational role.
Also, Occupational Therapy assessments responding to physical aids/devices/appliances/
adaptations stated to be required by the claimant, together with detailed costings
analyses can be undertaken.

Assessments typically average about 3 hours in duration, during which time we would administer appropriate tests and/or assessment formats within our structured programme on the patient, in addition to our qualitative techniques.
Full analyses of the claimant's medical records is undertaken in parallel with the aim of achieving a complete and objective opinion of the patient's presenting condition.

The overall design of our procedure is to provide all parties (eg. the insurance company, legal representatives, the Court, the Claimant, his/her treating clinicians, etc) with our own independent view comprising:-
A clear opinion of the patient's current clinical condition and capabilities,
our perception of his/her rehabilitative potential,
a Treatment Plan tailored to suit the particular clinical & personal circumstances of the claimant,
together with an estimation of the likely time-framework for a possible return to work.

In this way the patient is provided with a clear goal and expectation structure around which he/she can plan their treatment progress, and principals or legal bodies involved with considerations of the patient's condition can be similarly fully informed as to the true extent of plaintiff's disability and the likelihood of success of rehabilitative approaches.

Each of our assessments comprises a depth investigation into the patient's clinical condition and unique circumstances.
Consultancy time is therefore allocated to meet the particular requirements of each individual case.

We are prepared to travel anywhere in the UK to assess claimants, usually in their homes or failing that at a convenient City Centre location.

Please note: instructions received from outside the United Kingdom to assess patients within the UK must be issued in writing from a bona fide agent (eg. a solicitor, or some other appropriate British professional) located and practising within the UK.

From the date of receipt of instructions, appointments are typically fixed for approx' 4 weeks thereafter. This also usually provides sufficient time to acquire the patient's General Practitioner (GP) / Medical Attendant's records, any hospital/academic records and a report from the last employer, prior to our seeing the assessee.
Submission of our Report is usually within approximately one month following the examination. This is both a function of our workload and our internal procedure whereby a draft report is initially prepared, followed by detailed internal discussion and analysis, meticulous scrutiny of the GP records (sometimes quite voluminous in form), examination of other materials gathered by ourselves either from the patient's last employer, school/college, etc, all in readiness for the assembly of the finalised Report.

The usual method of instruction followed by our clients is for them to send us copies of all materials they have on file (all medical reports, Particulars of Claim, claims progress reports, and so on), together with a covering letter setting out the instructing client's requirements and thoughts on the case.

We then issue our Terms of Reference for approval by the client, alongside notifying all parties, including the assessee, of the proposed assessment arrangements. Additionally, as indicated above, we undertake to obtain possession of the complete original GP medical records of the claimant, as well as any supporting documentation from the patient's employer, accountants, etc.

A psychological consultation would typically last about 3 hours or so, (longer for an alleged head injury) during which time we would administer appropriate psychological tests and assessment materials within our structured programme on the patient, in addition to our qualitative assessment techniques.
Occupational therapy assessments are of a similar magnitude and duration.
Our reports are re-known for their depth, and include recommendations for any necessary rehabilitative therapy or treatment, suggested changes to existing treatment regimes, detailed costings analyses, whether there exists further potential in terms of clinical management of the patient, and wherever possible an estimation of time scale for a return to some form of employment.
