My country is a south Asian nation that once was part of Pakistan; its capital city is Dhaka. Dhaka is not only the capital but also the largest city in Bangladesh. In 1971, after a nine month civil war between East and West Pakistan, Bangladesh became independent. The name Bangladesh means Bengal nation. The country is often referred as East Bengal because it has many cultural and graphical features with nearby west Bengal. Bangladesh is one of the world’s most densely populated countries. Its rapid population growth leads to serious over crowding. Widespread poverty has also long characterized the region. The people in Bangladesh are Bangladeshi. Most of them are poor farmers who struggle to make living on small plots of land.

My country is generally warm and humid throughout the year. The temperature is different from one part of the country to another, temperatures in Bangladesh average about 82oF in April, the hottest month. January, the coldest month has an average temperature is 64oF. Bangladesh has ample rain, the eastern part of the country has an average annual rainfall of about 100 inches and the west has an average of about 65 inches. The rainy season of Bangladesh starts from mid-march to the end of October. Many of the monsoon rains in Bangladesh makes the rivers to overflow and flood the surrounding countryside. Cyclones often strike Bangladesh at the of the end monsoon season. These violent storms may be accompanied by huge destructive waves called tsunamis that rise from the Bay of Bengal and sweep the low-lying countryside. Some of the most sever cyclones and tsunamis have destroyed towns and villages and killed thousands of people.

The Bangladeshi farm the land with simple tools and ancient methods, much as their ancestors did many years ago. Most rural villagers have homes make of bamboo. A typical home consists of only one or tow rooms. Few homes in rural areas have electricity or plumbing. Most of the families in the cities and towns live crowed together in small wooden house. Some wealthy city families have large brick or concrete homes. In urban slums, the houses are built of cardboard, or stick.

Religion causes much in the life of most Bangladesh, including food, marriage customs, and family relationships. About 85 percents of the people Muslim. The law of Islam, the Muslim religion forbids the eating pork. Most Muslim parents arrange marriages for the children. Less than 15 percent of the people of Bangladesh are Hindus. Hindus are divided into various social classes called castes. Each caste has its own customs and rules of behavior. Caste regulations limit the extent to which members of one caste may associate with members of another caste. Most of the ethnic groups of Chattogong hills area practice Buddhism. Less than one percent of the people of Bangladesh are Christen.

Most Bangladeshis 15 years of age or older cannot read and write. A law requires children from ages 6 to 10 attend school. But he law is not strictly enforced, and many youngsters do not attend school. Food shortages and unsanitary living conditions in Bangladesh makes to widespread cholera, leprosy, tuberculosis, and other diseases. Mosquitoes that thrive in the nation’s swampy regions spread malaria. Malaria kills thousands of Bangladeshis annually. Bangladesh has a serious shortage of doctors, nurse, hospitals, and medical supplies.
