This is the real story...
PART 1
In a small town called Sleepy Hollow, legend has it that a ghost rides around at night. According to the story, he is the ghost of an American soldier. The legend then tells that this soldier lost his life, and indeed his head, in an unnamed battle in the Revolution. The specter rides at night, from the graveyard to the site of the battle, and then back before daylight.
PART 2
Ichabod Crane, the local schoolteacher, was kind of a strange man. He liked to read, mostly about ghosts. He also had a bit of a thing on a beautiful heiress. Unfortunately, he had to share his love with her with Brom Bones, the local jock-type show-off. Ichabod is not the braves of souls, and often stayed out late, and had to walk home, through dark trails. A snowy bush, or other haunts of the imagination would often spook him. One night, Ichabod received an invitation to a party, hosted by the father of the heiress. Ichabod decided to go, and so he had to borrow a horse, an old horse by the name of gunpowder, which, despite having lost one eye, still had some spunk. Ichabod made his way to the party, all the time thinking of all the different foods he would be enjoying.
PART 3
At the party, there is good times and good food. Sewing for the women and stories for the men. Brom Bones gets up and tells his tale of a meeting with the headless horseman, and how he raced for his life to escape the horseman, and just hardly survived.
After all the other guest had left, Ichabod tried to talk to Mrs. Van Trassel, the object of his affection, but something went horribly wrong, and Ichabod left in a hurry, alone, in the dark...
PART 4
Very upset by the events of the evening, Ichabod left by himself, in the dark, although he soon realized his mistake. The moon was full and was casting some very aerie shadows. Wishing gunpowder would walk faster, Ichabod was very nervous. Then, in the darkness, he saw a large figure on a horse, standing just of the trail. Glad he was no longer alone, Ichabod rode up to the figure and asked his name. When he got no reply, he asked again. The figure stepped onto the trail, and in horror, Ichabod saw the person to be headless. Ichabod turned in horror and fled, but the headless horseman was right behind, holding his head in his lap. Ichabod tried to escape, but could not gain any distance from the headless horseman. Then, to make things worse, Ichabod's saddle slipped off. The horseman raised his head no his arm, and threw it at Ichabod. Ichabod tried to dodge, but collided with it, and fell of the horse.
PART 5--After
According to the story, Ichabod was never seen in Sleepy Hollow again. All that was found was a trampled saddle, gunpowder (the horse), Ichabod's hat, and pieces of a jack-o-lantern.
