This is a translation of one of the ancient Celtic Bardic teaching poems:

Firewood

Beechwood fires are bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year.
Chestnut only good they say
if for long its laid away.
Make a fire of elder tree
Death within your house shall be,
But ash new or ash old
is fit for queen with crown of gold.
Birch and fir logs burn too fast
Blaze up bright and do not last.
It is by the Irish said
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread.
Elmwood burns like churchyard mold.
Even the very flames are cold;
But ash green or ash brown
is fit for queen with golden crown.
Poplar gives a bitter smoke;
Fills your eyes and makes you choke.
Applewood will scent your room
With an incense-like perfume.
Oaken logs, if dry and old
Keep away the winter's cold;
But ash wet or ash dry
A queen shall warm her slippers by
.

Many of the Druidic teachings were put in poetry form to aid in memorization.

Bog Oak

The bog oak used in these sets is approximately 5,000 years old and was gathered close to Slieve an Aireann – the Iron Mountain, in County Leitrim, Ireland. According to legend, this was the place where the Tuatha de Dannan first arrived in Ireland in their cloud ships through the magic mist. Who knows who may have walked beneath these trees? Nuada Silverhand? Lugh of the Long Spear? The Dagda?

These trees are old enough to have been growing when the Gods and Heroes walked the land, when myths and legends were being formed.

Oak is the chief tree of the Druids and it’s Ogham name – ‘Dur’ – is combined with ‘Wid’ – to know, to form the word ‘Druid’ – the knower of the Oak. To know the Oak is to understand the secrets of ogham and Tree Lore. The oak stands for strength and protection. It also symbolises the lightning flash of inspiration as it is the tree most often hit by
lightning.

Bog oak was formed thousands of years ago when the climate changed and water levels rose forming bogs. As Oaks do not grow in bogs, the roots were drowned causing the trees to fall into the peat and be preserved. The bog Oak is naturally black, a reaction between the tannic acid of the Oak and the iron in the bog water.

This Ogham set has been treated with linseed oil, turpentine and beeswax. If further polishing is required, please use a high-quality furniture beeswax.
