He was also a prominent citizen, serving on the town council for many years before becoming Bailif (or Mayor) in 1568. Williams mother was Mary Arden. Daughter of Robert Arden, who was a farmer in the nearby willage of Wilmcote. John and Mary set up home on Henley Street, Stratford. Which is now known as Williams birthplace. John and mary lost 2 children before having William. They had five children, another of whom died young.
William was born on April 23rd before he was baptized on April 26th 1564. He died on his birthday in 1616, 52 years later. It is said that he died of a fever, the buriel was recorded as April 25th 1616 in the register of Stratfords Holy Trinity Church.
As the son of a leading townsmas, William almost certainly attened Stratfords 'petty' or junior school before progressing, perhaps at the age of seven to the Grammar School, which still stands today. The Grammar Schools cirriculum was geared to teaching pupils Latin, both spoken and written.The classical writters studied in the classroom influenced Shakespeare's plays and poetry. For exsample some od his ideas for plot and characters came from Ovid's tales, the plays os Terence and Plautus and Roman history.
It is not known what Shakespeare did when he left school, probably at the age of 14 which was usual. In November of 1582, he married Anne Hathaway, the daughter of Richard Hathaway a local farmer. Anne's home known as Anne Hathaway's Cottage still stands in the village of Shottery a mile from Stratford. Anne was 26 at the time of the marrage while William was only 18. There first born child, Susanna was baptised on May 26 1583, 2 years later twons followed, Hamnet and Judith
We do not know why Shakespear left Stratford for London, or what he was doing before becoming a professional actor and dramatist in the capital.He probably arrived in London around 1596/1587. There was various traditions and stories about the so-called 'lost years' between 1585 and 1592, a period of which there is virtually no evidence of concerning his life. |
Shakspears first printed works were two long poems, 'Venus and Adonis' (1593) and 'The Rape of Lucrece'(1594). These were both dedicated to the Earl of Southampton, a young courtier and favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who had become Shakespears patron. Most of the Sonnets were probably written at this time, althought they were not published untill 1609. |
Shakespeare's eldest daughter, Susanna, married John Hall a Stratford phyisician in 1607 and gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, the following year. Shakespeare's other daughter, Judith, married Thomas Quiney, a Stratford vinter in 1616. Shakespears son Hamnet, Judiths twin brother died in 1596 at age eleven. Shakespeare's widow Anne died in 1623 and was buried beside him. When Shakespeare died his family put this on his gravestone, 'Good frend for Jesus sake forbeare
To digg the dust enclosed heare;
Blese be ye man yt spares these stones
And curst be he yt moves my bones'
Shakespeare's family line ended with the death of his grand-daughter Elizabeth in 1670. |
