It is obvious that the majority of us fans are not pleased with Scholastics antics. I propose we do something about it. Theres no way we can make Scholastic change its ways... But there IS a chance we can gain recognition! But it will only work if many people participate. I suggest we write to Time and Newsweek, as well as several literary magazines, (also any local newspapers or magazines, but these would not of course get as many letters) Given the interestingness of this situation and the books huge popularity, if enough participate we may have a chance. I suggest you write something similar to the following (thanks to Chee-Dolus for helping me refine some parts), though preferably not directly copied or they may think we are all the same person. Here is a list of addresses to send your letter too:
Letters@time.com -Time
Letters@newsweek.com -Newsweek
feedback@bookmagazine.com -Book
If anybody has ideas for other targets, please respond with them.
Dear _____,
I am a fan of Animorphs, a popular series of books by Katherine Applegate. Animorphs is published be Scholastic. Polls would suggest Animorphs is read mainly by children 11-14, though there are fans years in either direction. A large number of these have taken events at Scholastics condescending and infantile web site, especially the heavily-censored forum used as a propaganda engine by creating opinion polls and then publishing only those submissions dishing out praise to Scholastic, a practice many fans take as an insult to their intelligence. More became angry when Scholastic creating a television program loosely based on the books, which scaled down the complex and interesting characters into Perfect But Totally Uninteresting Role Models, dumbed down the plots to show their total lack of respect for their fans intelligence, and removing interesting ethical dilemmas into simple Barney-like morals. Obviously, the focus is on pleasing parents with cliches rather than creating quality television that challanges the mind. Of course, the fan opinions in the forum have nothing but praise for the show. This and the similarily dumbed-downed advertising campaign paints a picture of Animorphs fans as fools. It is sad to see a publisher so out of touch with the fans making it rich. For these reasons, we have started a letter-writing campaign, and would be much obliged if ______ published a blurb recognizing these sentiments of the Animorphs fan base.
